Particulate Respirators


Particulate Respirators also known as Filtering Facepieces (FFP) or Dust Masks cover the nose and mouth and are designed to protect the wearer from Particulate (dust, mist or fume) hazards only.
This type of mask must not be worn for protection against vapours/gases, in enclosed unventilated areas or where there is a reduction in normal Oxygen levels (>19.5%)
Furthermore, in the workplace, there is a requirement that Face Fit testing is conducted to ensure a high level of face fit and hence protection. The presence of facial hair can significantly reduce the integrity of the face fit seal. 

FFPs are classified into 3 separate categories: 

FFP1 will filter up to 80% of particles measuring up to 0.6 microns and will protect up to  x4 (APF) the recommended exposure  level (WEL) Maximum inward face seal leakage allowed 22%

FFP2 will filter up to 94% of particles measuring up to 0.6 microns and will protect up to x10 (APF) the recommended exposure level (WEL) Maximum inward face seal leakage allowed 8%

FFP3 will filter up to 99% of particles measuring up to 0.6microns and will protect up to x 20 (APF) the recommended exposure level (WEL) Maximum inward face seal leakage allowed 2%

The inclusion of an exhalation valve allows for more comfort for longer wear periods, but are more expensive

Nuisance dust masks may resemble FFPs but they are not considered PPE
